2 die after swimming in waters off The Baths

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Police continue their investigations into Saturday morning’s (June 25, 2016) boating accident that resulted in the death of Trevon Thomas, 22, of Hope Hill on the main island of Tortola.

Thomas is reported to have been one of two persons thrown from a vessel which was at the time traveling at high speed in Road Harbour. The vessel is presently in the possession of Police awaiting inspection by marine experts.

In two other incidents, visitors Robert James Schmitt, 64, and Robert John Maier, 76, both of Washington, USA died while swimming in the waters off The Baths. 

On Monday morning, June 20, 2016 Robert Schmitt told his wife that he was experiencing difficulty while swimming to shore from a dinghy. He was assisted to shore and transported to the Iris O’Neal Clinic where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 11:35am. Similarly, on Friday morning, June 24, 2016 Robert Maier told his daughter that he was feeling winded after a swim near The Baths. He was taken to shore where he collapsed. After several attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at 10:06am.

Police are also looking into the sudden death last Tuesday afternoon, June 21, of Velda Stewart, 48, who died while awaiting treatment at Peebles Hospital.

All four persons are awaiting postmortem examinations to determine the cause of death.

Police investigations are ongoing.
