"So many young people were meeting me in the district asking me for jobs...asking me what it takes to become a doctor or lawyer. I'm not an expert in those areas so I decided to do allow the professionals to come in and speak," said Honourable Fahie during his opening remarks. Photo: VINO

CAPOON'S BAY, Tortola, VI - Representative for the First District Honourable Andrew A. Fahie yesterday October 16, 2015 launched his First District Job Fair and Career Expo held in the Leonora Delville Primary School in Capoon’s Bay, bringing together potential employees with employers.

He had told youth of the district to turn out in their numbers dressed for success with the intention of landing a job from some of the companies and corporations which took part.

"So many young people were meeting me in the district asking me for jobs...asking me what it takes to become a doctor or lawyer. I'm not an expert in those areas so I decided to do allow the professionals to come in and speak," said Honourable Fahie during his opening remarks.

He said that it took some time and effort to put together all of the professionals. They included engineers and architects, doctors, lawyers, persons from the financial services industry, graphic artists, nurses, and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

He also thanked CCT Global Communications, Delta Petroleum, Bolo's Department Store, One Mart, the Post Office, Guana Island, International Motors Ltd, and Clarence Thomas Limited.

Other companies that were not physically present at the Expo but asked that names of young people be registered with them were James Todman Construction, Tortola Auto Group, Oil Nut Bay among others. The Labour Department also took part in the Expo.

As part of the day’s activities, companies and professions were given the opportunity to make presentations to the young people with regard to the job that they were expected to do and what else were required of them to be able to access the opportunity.

Honourable Fahie, however, cautioned that the Expo was not a guarantee that the job was theirs.

"I want to thank the companies that are here. I want you the young people to go and register to each and every one of them. And if you can't get a job after registering with 15 companies I don't know what to say. I think your chances are great," he said.

Myron own was first...then Frazer...no need for all these job Expo. There are only so much jobs to give..plus the labor dept keep stamping work permits..until they start taking an interest in their own getting jobs the more things change the more they stay the same. Glad to see Fahie finally doing some meaningful work in his district now.

Your statement to me is pathetic. Dam if you do, dam if you don't. When the politicians do nothing ayo complain & yet when Fahie & other elected officials do something positive ayo still complain. For a man in the Opposition with limited access to funds & resources like that that the Government members have, it is clear that Fahie is doing a marvelous job.

the reason the youth are jobless is due to the questions Fahie's being asked by them "how to be a doctor, lawyer" if they don't know how to become any of these professions then they shouldn't be seeking employment in them, Everyone wants a high paying job that is why the country is full of expats doig the jobs the youths and older locals won't. I have had vacancies posted for over a year now and the only local who applied wanted to only do the job on the days she could make it.

Point taken but remember this was not just a job fair for those youth who are unemployed but was also a career fair for those in Secondary schools & HLSCC also.

@ king long: just a bunch a talk talk and like you said the youth of the territory at a stand still: try encouraging then to own their own business and help them get started: the foreign airlines are given Financial assistance by our government why not assist our own people to get a business off the ground.... entrepreneurs are what we need

Fahie I admire your drive to get positive things done for your people despite the few naysayers who continue to try to pull you down.

you do something to help we talk you do nothing we still talk. Fahie(People) the way to failure is to please others and the way to success is to please yourself. So it is up to you to want to fail or succeed.

First of all I would like to say that I appreciate all those district representatives are doing for the young people of the territory.. But in my opinion I still find it unfair for job seekers..why?.. Most of these jobs requires to much, bachelors degree, this degree that degree, they want people with 5-10 years experience, I think they probably doing it because they want any interesting young job seeker to boost their level on education.. Or they just don't want to waste anytime with training they just want them to jump right into the job field.. But in this territory it ain't everybody gonna be lawyers and doctors, and everybody won't be on the same level of education.. It have a lot of interesting persons that want a job but feel that they can't get it because of the requirements these jobs asking for.. What I believe they should do is have that individual do a three months training or something boost their confidence to further their education if necessary..

A lot of employers have entry level positions that don't require a degree or experience. But too often young job seekers overlook those jobs because the want to start from the middle and want to pick and choose what they want to do.
