ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- 20 thousand gallons of waste oil is scheduled to be exported by the end of July as the Department of Waste Management (DWM) continues its quest of achieving a cleaner, greener and more beautiful [British] Virgin Islands.

DWM Director Mr Marcus E. Solomon said that the department is ecstatic to be able to divert this oil from the landfill, “which lowers our vulnerabilities to adhoc fires. This is also significant because this positions BVI to do our part to meet global sustainability development goals by repurposing waste material where possible,” Mr Solomon stated in a Government Information Service (GIS) press release on July 12, 2024.

The waste oil facility in Sea Cows Bay became operational on Friday, April 5, 2024, and has the capacity to store 20,000 gallons of used oil.

Although the press release did not state, the waste oil is reportedly to be shipped to Trinidad.

Shipment to be done every 3 months

Mr Solomon, speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online in February 2024, had noted that no revenue will be obtained from the project; however “the oil will be shipped every three months to be treated and recycled.”

Meanwhile, Mr Solomon, while thanking the community for their involvement in helping the department to realise this milestone, said there are a few things that can be done to further enhance the collection processes.

No dumping of garbage at waste oil facility- DWM Director

“We want the public to refrain mixing oil and gas together in the same container as there are separate storage identified for each. We also want small quantities of waste oil from households, small commercial businesses, hotels, restaurants and government organisations to be taken directly to the collection facility Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

“Finally, we want persons to refrain from dumping garbage at the waste oil facility. Garbage can be placed inside of community dumpsters, it can be discarded using the house to house collection programme or taken directly to dumpsites which are located throughout the Territory,” Mr Solomon advised.

but why have a storage system and no recycle plant next to it to turn the oil into fuel for the government vehicles ?

I like the idea of recycling this oil, but why don't we take it to the next step so that we can make money from this? According to a T&T news site, the oil collected is refined "into a high yield, high quality and environmentally safe base oil product for reuse in the market". In other words, once the free oil arrives in T&T, it will be processed and sold. Isn't there any way for us to benefit financially from this?

We give it away because we need the free money running the demonstration projects. If we admitted to the rest of the world that there are BVI Businesses successfully exporting or processing waste oils right here then foreign agencies & individuals would stop funding their slow roll of our entire waste system. BVI People would get the money and the Govt & their Partners are worried it may not be the "right" BVI People.....Photo ops & politricks......

You are very naive if you don't think people are making money off of this . A couple of us tried this model some years ago and it was turned down unless govt made some money.

    BVI OIL IS GOOD OIL.

If our oil was no good, no company would offer money to but it. It, our preused oil is good oil.
If we mix our oil with crushed gravel and a reasonable measure of cement, we can use the mixture to fill many of our traffic road holes, if done properly.

    BVI oil is good

        @ What BVI oil?

Learn to think out the box.

If you buy a drum of oil, is it mine or your? The oil that BVI government buys from others, regardless of from who, it is our oil. Those that buying our used oil it only cannot be called BVI oil, if we keep it for yourself.
If we mix our used oil (BVI oil) with crushed gravel and cement, many of our thousands of traffic potholes can be fix.

      Read the following.

The oil the the BVI government has paid for and was delivered to us, who now owned the oil, the seller our the buyer? The oil others desire to buy from us even though it has already used and now called oil, who is the owner now before they buy it from us?
So you see shallow brain, before other buy used from us, it is BVI oil.

Through the grape vine, they took the knowledge of this venture from that VG young man to make something happen, now they are turning to him for the help to remove the oil from the territory when he was willing to do it for free without payment from the government but they turned and give the contract to their friend for big money and money under the table.
