The small dinghy had all their navigation lights. Were in a mooring field / no wake zone. This was manslaughter

Presumably the DPP will charge the driver that was not killed irrespective of who had right of way - like she did in the crazy prosecution of Mr Morrell.

So you were on the water when this tragic accident happened were you.. clearly not.. don't presume the captain was going at high speed..the dingy had no lights.. condolences to the family.. thoughts to the captain of the other vessel who is currently going through hell

How would you know the smaller dingy had no lights. Reports say it had all navigation lights. Also, how would you know what the other captain is going through. Reports say he/she was driving full speed, and then fled the scene, and were apprehended back at the mega yacht.

The disease is the captain of the boat I doubt he was rich , what an insensitive comment whether somebody's rich or not

BC, where you went to school to learn to spell, buddy? "Disease" can never captain a boat.

If you knew how to read or spell, you would see she is saying that the DECEASED's family members would at least be taken care of since that is a rich area with rich people. Not that it would fix their pain. You wrote "disease". You are just wrong on so many levels.

He was a mate on a yacht working and from SC. He works for tips so no he is not rich…. His family is at a complete loss. No money can’t replace a child, brother or friend and hope the murder gets what’s deserved…my sister used to work with him and he was one of those who brought joy to your life.

This is a really sad thing to have happened.
On the water, regardless of right of way, both boats have a shared responsibility to avoid collision.
The trouble is, so many of these charter dinghies dont have fixed lights on board. So it is up to the people in the dinghy to make syre thwy have a light. The trouble is, when people go ashore in the afternoon, early evening for a drink and then dinner, the lighr is in some cases just forgotten...that is the sad reality. So when they return to the boat, after dinner they dont have a proper light...ive seen tgis so many times.
Dont know the circumstances surrounding this horrible accident, but something needs to be dont to make sure all dinghies have lights an people ar vigilant out on the water. Too many times you see small dinghies fro. Charter boats speeding through the mooring fields, without any idea of what possible dangers are out there for collission, or running someone over.
    Sorry for your loss

Shocking accident..too many people in a small dingy with no lights unfortunately they were hit..it's like driving a car on the highway with no lights.. what do you expect.. condolences to the family.. thoughts to the captain of the other boat as he must be going through hell

It seems strange to me that, what I’m hearing was a mega yacht (maybe), didn’t have the ability, on its own, to sense another vessel with living beings on board, lights or no lights. We have older cars (I drive one) that have warning censors. I shouldn’t assume, but shouldn’t I? Something isn’t adding up.

Interesting observation. The article doesn’t mention no lights, I’d like to hear more from you. You know more, clearly, than is being revealed.

My observation regarding no lights theroy..if one see's a dingy in the water with lights on..one would avoid hitting it.. however if there are no lights.. one unfortunately can't see something in the water until it's too late.. condolences to the family of this tragic accident..my thoughts too the other captain who is currently going through hell

Again, where are you getting your information? It's a no wake zone, and reports say the smaller dingy had lights. All your concern seems to be with a captain that ran over another boat and fled the scene, and the 'feelings' of that captain.
        • BJ (04/12/2024, 23:28) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
You make a lot of assumptions. Why do you think the group in the 11-foot didn’t have a light? Even so, the accident happed around 6pm, right after dusk in a no wake zone. If the 20-foot was going 5 mph there is no way it would have enough velocity to run over a dingy.

Unless you saw the accident, please don’t speculate or accuse the deceased captain of doing anything wrong. He is the brother of my childhood friend.

Those of you commenting that there were too many people in a small boat clearly have never chartered in the BVI or any Caribbean island. Right or wrong, it is the standard practice. Everyone there knows everyone does it and are thus aware. It is also relatively safe as the rubber dinghy maxes out at 3-4MPH and the water is 85 degrees. Two rubber boats hitting each other at that speed or a rubber boat hitting a moored boat at that speed is unlikely to cause anything but a bit of embarrassment. However, driving through a mooring field at high speed, especially at night, is criminal. If that is indeed what happened, I do hope those involved are held fully responsible.
Our condolences to all families and friends involved. So sad! It is an unfortunate event in one of the best places on the planet.

If you are going slow in a mooring field, it's pretty hard to kill somebody.

This man was not only extremely amazing and kind, but he was a well versed captain. His lights were on, yacht's were not. This was manslaughter.

How can this be manslaughter.. this is a horrific accident..No lights on..it's like you driving a car with no lights on and someone crashing into you.. who's fault is it..??.. condolences to the family of the captain who was taken..my thoughts go out to the captain of the other vessel who is currently going through hell
      • dr (27/11/2024, 15:14) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
No, it's like a small car driving 5mph/8kmh in a parking lot, with its lights on (reports say it had navigation lights on), and being run over by a huge truck at 50mph/80kph. And then the huge truck leaving the scene, leaving the driver to die, and trying to get on a plane. And you're worried about the truck driver.

Would having nightly presence of authoritative figure in some of these highly use /traveled area help to minimize such incidents in the future? There seems to be too many small dinghies use these areas without adequate lighting thereby making it dangerous to other users

Good people there was an accident like this just over 3-years ago. An collision between two boats in the channel with a loss of life. The online media feasted on this offering mis-information and innuendo. The comments were scathing. For all intents and purposes someone was blamed and found guilty by the court of popular opinion. RBVIPF did nothing to help offering no information; producing no official accident report; nothing. without the real facts the police 6-months later arrested a passenger on one of the boars and charged him with manslaughter. 27-months later that person won in court exposing police malfeasance, official corruption and the evil doings of the owners of the boat in which he was a passenger. This is all in the public record. Let's not now jump to conclusions with this tragic accident as to who caused this collision; who was the right of way vessel; and if charges should be levied. There is an onus on the RVIPF to deliver a report stating the facts. Let's hope this is forthcoming.
