ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - "So I'll try to get you to move from a slave to an owner, from a follower to a leader, from a consumer to a producer," were some of the words of Chairman and CEO of S. Graham and Associates, Stedman Graham.

Mr Graham, partner of popular television host Oprah Winfrey, stood for the first time before an audience in the Virgin Islands at the Power your Breakthrough and Thrive in 2013 Six Pillars of Success annual conference on June 7 and 8, 2013 at The Moorings and Treasure Isle respectively.

The motivational speaker and entrepreneur was part of a dynamic team that featured in the two-day conference, the brainchild of Managing Director of MWM Global Holdings Group Limited Mr Meade W. Malone. The others featured in the conference were assistant CEO at the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority, Ms Jennifer Nugent-Hill; Bestselling author, popular public speaker, a powerful coach and charismatic teacher, Ms Lisa Nichols and highly sought after business and transformational leadership coach, Ms Allyson Byrd.

The pace for the conference was set on the opening night with one of the most inspirational dialogues led by Ms Lisa Nichols who spoke of the route of breakthrough, motivating the masses. "Some of your breakthrough wouldn't come served with warm cookies and milk, but you need it and you are ready for it now. You have been given the gift of a voice," said Nichols adding that sometimes a breakthrough comes with some mild discomfort.

Her pace setting presentation had touching messages:

"We have a tendency to think that we can live our dreams and still stay comfortable."

"If you are doing something without being scared you aren’t playing big enough, if you can see the end your vision is too short. You are supposed to think so big that you can't see the end and make you so scared think where it could go."

"You are in the position on this island to change the trajectory of your life, your children's life, your siblings' life, you have a unique position right now where the playing fields are equal. No one has it greater than you. They may just be playing bigger than you because they said a couple more yes than you but you have the right."

The highlight of her message was told in the story which was taught to her by her grandmother. It spoke of valuing the work of others and to treat it with respect as the fore-parents would have already paid the ultimate price for what the present generation enjoys today.

Her grandmother has insisted that she made the bed, tidy the face sink and leave a healthy tip for the maid before leaving the room of a prestigious hotel.

"She (her grandmother) said let me tell you why you did that, and I believe my grandmother was talking to all of you, she was just talking to me that day. She said your great great great grandmother was a day worker, she cleaned up hotels like this and when people knew she was coming they would leave their rooms extra nasty. You left her money because when your great grandmother got a tip we were able to eat meat that day, you might think you are walking on this plush carpet but you are not. You are walking on our shoulders and this room was paid for long before you were even born."

That set the pace for the Saturday June 8, 2013 sessions, which was facilitated by the dynamic team as was held at Treasure Isle.

Acting Premier, Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering was among those present at the opening session, June 7, 2013 where he represented Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, who he said is currently out of the Territory on a well deserved vacation.

Hon Pickering welcomed the team to 'Nature's Little Secret' citing that he is convinced that the Virgin Islands is going to be a little nation sometime in the future.

"ABC", "Asura" does have a valid point. Not to take anything away from the conferences but if a man decides to talk about empowerment but disempowered his own employees-subsidiarily speaking that is, it is calls for concern about his true message and why some may want to take his "empowering" statements with a grain of salt!

If he offered those employees other positions within the Investment Firms' group of companies, I would say "pardon". But I've not read that he did, so I must concur with Asura!

Have you asked yourself whether any of the employees were worth of being re-hired at other companies? Did it ever occur to you that maybe majority of those laid off weren't pulling their weight anyway? Why when locals are laid off everything must be in their favor? What if they weren't doing what they needed to do? Then, if there are no vacancies in the other firms where would they fit in? People need to grow up and realize life is real. This from here not from here $h1t will bury some of you if you don't wake up. People need to take their roles seriously no matter how big or small because the companies are learning more and more how to do 'more' with 'less'. The days of people surfing the net half-day, taking 2hr lunch, calling in sick after almost every holiday weekend and so on, while being paid bonuses, perks, full salary etc. How can that be sustained? WAKE UP BOSS!! The BVI doesn't exist in a bubble, it's part of the global economy. Until some of you own businesses you will never understand. Business is business regardless of where anybody is from.

Look at all tem grinning because they just got a lot of money out of us again. Now they are gone and is the BVI in a better place? NO. All these motivational speakers do is boost you up and then leave with people's money that we couldn't even afford in the first place and we are no better off than when they came. What is wrong with our so called leaders? Keep entertaining outsiders while we sucking wind. I am Sick Of It!
