VI should use greenhouses for ganja – Doug Wheatley
On the Speak Out BVI radio programme aired on March 11, 2014 Wheatley said the Virgin Islands has some of the best marijuana growers in the world and should take advantage of this.
“We have people here who are the best marijuana growers in the world, they’ve beaten those in Jamaica and those in St Maarten…. they’re good at it,” Wheatley stated.
The commentator noted that some of the Territory’s young men and young women already know to cultivate the crop, are happy to do so and want to be involved in the land.
“I think this is an industry that we can develop,” he continued.
According to Wheatley, it was a waste that Police had destroyed some 3500 marijuana plants recently.
He noted that the marijuana industry looks to be a promising industry for medicinal purposes in the Territory and suggested that the greenhouses at Paraquita Bay be put to use in this arena.
“We have some greenhouses up at Paraquita Bay, we say we can’t find any use for them. I think one of them could be used to grow marijuana for medicine purposes,” he suggested.
The commentator bemoaned that outsiders have been dominating the local tourism industry and suggested that locals should take charge. He further cautioned that locals should not lose the opportunity to become front runners in the marijuana industry ahead of outsiders.
“They had to come from somewhere to enjoy them and to start up these businesses here. We live here, we enjoy it here but somehow or the other we didn’t start the businesses or we were not given the incentive to start the businesses and so they came in and started the businesses,” Wheatley said.
“Don’t let them have to come in and start the marijuana business,” he cautioned, “we can start that here, because we have a lot of experience in it.”
